Life is a Dream

Peace is but a Dream

If everything that is or was began with a dream, what would you dream of?  For in our dreams we enter a world that is entirely our own, let them swim in the deepest ocean or glide over the highest cloud.  A wise man once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.  This famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi shows that if you wish to make a difference in this world, you cannot simply conform to the pre-approved routine life that society prescribes to you.  If we fail to take action, we shall forever be victims of the merciless influence of the government and those who proclaim themselves superior over others(EA).  “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind”.  So many people have spoken out, but they have not been heard because you choose to ignore the things you don’t want to hear.  “Fear of a name soon increases fear of the thing itself.”  Words will always retain their power, for you see words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth, and the truth is, if you seek the guilty, you need only look in a mirror.(LL)

Hate has no place among us, yet we continue to allow it to stay, as if everything is okay.  We fuel it with confused anger and fear, a common reaction to the unknown, until it becomes so big an obstacle, we can no longer see the truth(AN).  Why is this?  How is it that human beings can so consciously commit crimes, murder, steal, cheat, lie, and so many other things we know to be wrong, but do it anyways?(RQ)  Gay people are one of the most discriminated and ridiculed groups and one of the biggest victims of hate crimes.  36% of gays and lesbians are forced to leave home because of conflicts with their family over their sexual identities.   How can people live with themselves suppressing the pure human nature of another by forcing upon them their opinion of “the way things ought to be” knowingly so that it is wrong?(RQ).  Gay people, among others, have been oppressed by the power of hate purely because all people want to see is their “difference” rather who they really are.  What is straight, but a word?  A line can be straight, but the heart cannot be changed.

Christianity used to be, and still is, the largest religion of the United States.  According to Christian beliefs and the Bible, same-sex marriage/relationships is sin, therein a condemnation to hell, and an act against the will of God.(LA)  It is no wonder they would consider homosexuality an abomination.  Hatred because of beliefs can spread like a wild fire.  It burns everything in its path and effects everyone.(AN)  However, not everyone chooses to follow Christianity.  There are many other recognized religions in this world.  Often times, one may choose not to follow any religion at all, as it is there freedom to do so, guaranteed to them by the First Amendment of the Constitution under the umbrella liberty: freedom of expression.
The ongoing struggle for peace and equality within our country is a perpetual battle, and it will continue to snowball, growing larger and gathering strength, until it reaches its destination.(AN)  Like preceding endeavors, it is only a matter of time until the dream becomes a reality.  Victory is inevitable, as long as you have the perseverance.
There are many circulating facts about Gay people, a popular one being the homosexuality is not a choice, one is merely born that way.  Others believe that being gay is simply a mental illness that can or can’t be cured.  While scientist have not yet found concrete proof whether this “condition” is the result of genes and/or hormones, it is still decidedly the right of the person to be what they would.  I believe that gay people should retain the same rights as everyone else, including marriage.  We are people, all the same, after all.
No one else in the world will ever be able to see the things I see, do the things I do, hear what I hear, or feel what I feel because I am me, and I am the only me there will ever be.(P) Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to be to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.  Yes, I may be different, but so is everyone else, and yet they have the nerve to come together and pick on others(LL).  It is our differences that make us strong.  If we didn’t posses a need to feel like we are better than others, then everyone would be equal.  If the power of love were greater than the love of power, the world would know peace.  And so I dream on.
